Rockport Pirates Sweep Cape Ann Babe Ruth U13 Championship Series

Sunday, June 22. The 5th-seeded Pirates came from behind in game 2 of the best of 3 series to beat a very tough #2 seed Georgetown team, 11-7. The Pirates won the series opener in Georgetown 4-3. The intense series featured outstanding defense, pitching, and sportsmanship from both teams.

Game 1 of the series was a see-saw game which saw Georgetown jump out to an early 1-0 lead. Rockport fought back to take a 4-1 lead, only to see the Dodgers score twice in the bottom of the 7th inning before Rockport finally escaped with a 4-3 victory.

Georgetown jumped to an early 5-2 lead through 4 innings in Game 2. But Rockport mounted a furious 6-run, 2-out rally in the bottom of the 4th to take an 8-5 lead. The teams traded runs for the rest of the game. The Dodgers mounted another comeback in the top of the 7th and had runners on first and second, but grounded into a game- and series-ending double play.

Congratulations Pirates!

White Sox Win Majors Championship

The White Sox and coaches Chuck Elwell, Chris Wayrynen, Bill Aspesi, and Paul Shaut won the Majors Championship this year by defeating the Marlins in two consecutive games in the first round and then the Cardinals in two consecutive games in the finals. The highlight of the playoffs was the White Sox dramatic come-from-behind win in their first game with the Cardinals. Down 9-3 in the sixth, they scored 6 runs to tie the score and then won 11-10 in the bottom of the seventh after the Cardinals had gone ahead 10-9 in the top of the inning.

Home Run Derby & All-Star Game

On July 6th the first annual Home Run Derby and All-Star Game was held at McCloy field.

In The Home Run Derby three 11 year olds and twelve 12 year olds (3 from each of the Majors teams), nominated by their respective coaches, competed for the Home Run Derby crown. Each player was given 10 swings to hit as many home runs as possible. This year's contest ended in a four way tie. The Home Run Derby Co-Chamions for 2008 are Luke Andrew (Indians), Alex Bland (Marlins), Ryan Davins (White Sox), and Kyle Schrafft (Marlins).

Congratulations Luke, Alex, Ryan and Kyle!

Immediately following the Home Run Derby, players from the Majors National teams (Cardinals, Marlins) squared off against players from the American teams (Indians, White Sox) in the All-Star Game. Teams were comprised of 11-12 year old players nominated by their coaches from each of the Majors teams. The Americans won the game 7-3 and everyone had fun!

Thanks to Chuck Elwell for umpiring and to Tony Andrew for conceiving and organizing the event. We hope to build on this first-ever afternoon and make the Home Run Derby and All-Star Game an annual event.
